I have again fallen in love with Cannas and don’t expect to have a minor fling again. They were once those things planted in mixed colours in round beds in public parks, oh how awful! But used singly as feature plants in a sunny moist border or by or in a pond they truly come into their own.
C. ‘Brolga Dance’ is a water Canna hybrid selected by Frank Hogan in Queensland and I vow that even the most ardent Canna hater would find it hard to dislike.
It grows to about 1.5 metres tall and has narrow grey leaves finely edged in burgundy and certainly enough to make you want to grow it. However when its narrow petalled flowers in a soft terracotta erupt in early summer it shows itself to be a plant of great distinction and certainly not the gaudy sort of thing that people often assume a Canna has to be.
As a hybrid water Canna it can be grown and does very well in a pot sunk into a fish pond and will give value far longer than a water Iris. I have nice plants in 20cm. pots at $23.50 at the moment
