I know that this isn’t the rarest thing around but of all the scented plants I know Winter sweet has to be my favourite. Forget your Daphnes and Jasmines I would take this plant above all others for perfume and it is tough as they come as well.
It is a large deciduous shrub from Asia and mine after some years is easily 4 metres each way. It produces its spicy pale lemon flowers in winter and is infact lifting me off my feet as I walk down my front steps from mid June till about the end of July or even later.
It is usually raised from seed and so can take several year to start flowering but believe me it is truly worth it and I have lovely plants in 8″ pots at the moment for $28.50.
